He sat down for an exclusive discussion with the Marrow team, where he shares his personal experiences from his time during PG preparation and gives his take on some of the common queries in the minds of PG aspirants.

1) Hello Dr.Madhan. Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I am from the district of Kadalur in Tamil Nadu. I did my schooling at St.Paul’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Neyveli and pursued my MBBS from Madurai Medical College, Tamil Nadu. I graduated in the month of March, 2017 and joined Thrissur Medical College Alumni Association. I got a rank of 156 in AIIMS 2016 and AIR 2600 in NEET 2017 when I took up the exams in the midst of my internship. I was able to secure a seat in MS General Surgery, but my ambition is to do MD Radio-Diagnostics. So I decided to retake NEET the following year.

2) Did you feel the Marrow app offered you a strategic advantage, as compared to what your prep would have been without the app?

Marrow helped a lot with respect to the efficiency of my revision. There are some subjects, the revision of which I was able to finish in a matter of 2-3 days and that gives a huge advantage towards the end of your preparation.

3) Are there any specific topics/ video lessons/ test series pattern that you’d like to point out and highlight to our Marrow users?

Chapter-wise tests (Marrow Test modules) for each subject helped me complete my revision for each chapter in 2-3 hours. The Mock-NEET test by Marrow helped me equip myself for the actual NEET regarding the type of questions asked. After I gave my mock, I remember thinking the questions to be really tough. But then the mock exposed me to a lot of new questions and it helped me face the actual NEET better. The Psychiatry video lessons were really good for me during revision.

4) So how long was the duration of your PG prep?

I started my preparation only in April 2017. I had little idea regarding PG preparation before and I consider myself lucky to have gotten the rank I got in previous year’s AIIMS. I studied sincerely in my second year of MBBS and I think that helped me then.

5) So how many hours did you spend for prep per day? And how did you balance between your studies and revision?

I used to spend around 10 to 12 hours a day for studying and I allowed 2 hours for test a day. I used the online test series from Marrow and DAMS. I started my revision only in December. In the last 20 days I was able to finish my revision.

6) On a scale of 1 to 10, how well do would you grade your level of preparation for NEET PG?

I would grade myself 8.

7) NEET being a highly intense and competitive exam, it’s natural for students to have self-doubts and suffer dips in their confidence level. How did it affect your preparation?

Yes. I had several such moments right from the beginning. I usually resort to motivational videos and music to boost my confidence and that helped during those times.

8) What would be your advice to students going through such a phase of self-doubt?

It doesn’t matter if you don’t get what you want today. There’s always tomorrow and you should never stop putting the effort. I feel many people lose their confidence by comparing themselves to others and lose their self-confidence. I prioritised self-improvement and making myself better every day. In the end, each step matters and your efforts will always matter.

9) Were there any misleading practices regarding your prep that you that you eventually realised during the later phase of your preparation? How did you fix it?

I felt really bad that I hadn’t become the Pro user of Marrow right in the beginning. Marrow helped me complete my revision in a very efficient way and I really wished I had used the materials right from the beginning of my preparation.

10) Do you have any other advice or suggestions for students who are currently preparing for NEET PG?

Try aiming for the higher institutes and set your goals high. That will help you push your limits and even if you fall short it’s okay. The effort is what matters and never quite putting in your efforts. Make good and efficient notes. During revision, reading from text books will not be efficient. Your notes will help you cruise through the subjects during the last few days before the exam.

We congratulate Dr.Madhan for his achievement and wish him the very best for his future!
